What did you do today?

Today I explained the entire democratic process to my five year old Darling Daughter using hand puppets.

It was quite good if I do say so myself. It didn't start out as a puppet show but one question from Daughter led to another until it just kind of went that way.

Here's a snippet of our conversation:

DARLING DAUGHTER: What's a campaign?

DMG: It's what people do when they want to be president. They talk and talk and "blah blah blah, my ideas are best blah blah blah, vote for me, blah blah blah...."

DARLING DAUGHTER: And it's very boring...

DMG: It can be. But then they have a debate!

DARLING DAUGHTER: What's that?

DMG: That's when the people who want to be president talk to each other and fight! "Blah blah blah my ideas are best! No mine are! You shut up! You're a poopy head! Blah blah blah blah blah!!!!" It can be very exciting!

DARLING DAUGHTER: (delightful laughter) Do it again!!!

Things got sillier from that point on but in hindsight I don't think I was too far off the mark.

Five more days until the Iowa Caucus.

Too funny. Yeah you probably got it about right.

If she were a little older I would suggest the Iowa Caucus display at the Iowa Historical Museum. We home educate, and my wife has taken the kids there a couple of times. It has been a helpful tool to teach about the process. But my youngest is 8.

Hi Shane! Thanks for the tip! I haven't been down there in years. We'll have to check it out.
